Stranger Things won’t turn into a franchise once the series ends. Netflix was once the service that killed the video rental industry by delivering DVDs straight to subscribers’ homes. Then, it got into the streaming service game and started developing original content, beginning with House of Cards. From then on, they became a force to be reckoned with in the entertainment industry, providing some of the highest (and, occasionally, lowest) quality content out there – that includes TV shows such as Stranger Things.

Stranger Things – a sci-fi horror series created by Matt and Ross Duffer that’s set in the 1980s – is one of the most talked about TV shows in the industry today. It took the world by storm when it premiered in 2016, and its impact didn’t slow down when its second season aired in 2017. And while it’s undoubtedly one of the biggest properties under Netflix’s belt, the Duffer Brothers only plan on making four or five seasons of Stranger Things. Once the story comes to an end, that’s it… it’s over. As it stands, there aren’t any plans to expand the show into a franchise.

In an interview with ComicBookStranger Things executive producer Shawn Levy said Netflix hadn’t thought about franchising their properties until Stranger Things came along, but that’s a notion that he  and the Duffer Brothers aren’t interested in exploring, at least not at this time.

“The notion of a franchise didn’t exist at Netflix before Stranger Things. And we’ve certainly seen our growth as we move into merchandising, as we move into partnerships, and promotional partnerships. We don’t speak of it as [a] franchise. We definitely want to do several more seasons. Beyond that, certainly this has become one of the flagship brands of Netflix. And they would like to see us telling these stories in whatever ways, and for as many years as possible.”

Levy doesn’t appear interested in expanding the series – potentially through spinoffs, prequels, and sequels – but it seems that Netflix has thought about doing just that. Again, Stranger Things is arguably Netflix’s biggest property, especially after House of Cards‘ reputation took a hit following the sexual assault allegations levied against Kevin Spacey. And considering the subject matter, it’s hard not to see the potential in expanding the Stranger Things story. There are already many ways it can happen, but that’s not what Levy or the Duffer Brothers want to do.

Instead, the Duffer Brothers plan on telling a specific story with another two or three seasons. For now, fans can look forward to the show returning sometime in 2019, as Stranger Things season 3 is expected to start filming this spring. We’ll just wait and see what happens when the series comes to an end within the next few years.

There's something to be said about telling a whole story, start to finish.
They have a specific target, and don't drag things out until no one cares anymore.

Good, I say!  Let this thing finish before plans are made for a future as a franchise.  I am not opposed to it ever being a franchise, but I don't want the future to impede on the present.  Eleven, Will, and Mike still have a ways to go before we should even consider focusing on other avenues.

Good for them! Too many shows...cough...cough...hang on way past their prime. Five seasons sounds perfect!
