Dr Martin Brenner (played by Matthew Modine) was a major character in the first season of the Netflix show.
A senior research scientist at Hawkins National Laboratory, Brenner raises Eleven (Millie Bobby-Brown) in the lab and tests her telekinetic and psychic abilities through various damaging experiments throughout her childhood.
Brenner, who Eleven refers to as Papa, is responsible for creating the Demogorgon and the Upside Down through his experiments.
At the end of Stranger Things season one, the last we see of Brenner is in the final episode when he is attacked by the monster at the school.
What happened to him is left vague and while it looks like he was killed, his death is never properly addressed and the audience never actually sees a dead body - so it’s possible he’s still out there.
In season two, there is no sign of Brenner until Eleven meets her sister Kali (Linnea Berthelsen). The long lost sisters set out to kill a man, Ray (Pruitt Taylor Vince) who worked in Hawkins lab and harmed their mother in the past.
Pleading for his life, he tells the girls he can help them find Brenner, much to the shock of Eleven who thought he was dead.
Later in the episode, Kali uses her powers to conjure up an image of Brenner while trying to convince Eleven to help her with her mission.
Eleven is shaken and distraught when confronted with his image.

Seeing Brenner's image in season 2 left Eleven shaken
The short answer is yes.
Executive producer of Stranger Things, Shawn Levy has actually confirmed that Brenner is indeed alive.
Speaking on the Lost Sister episode of season two, and Eleven’s trip to Chicago, Levy said that the world of the show is getting bigger.
“But that feeling of the world getting a bit bigger especially coupled with the fact that it now seems clear that Brenner is alive, Brenner is out there,” he told Collider.

We saw Eleven and Kali reunited in season 2
Show creators The Duffer Brothers said after season one in 2016 that Brenner’s “death” at the school in season one, would be very “unsatisfying” for viewers.
Matt Duffer said: “He would deserve much more than that as an ending. So yes, there's a possibility of seeing him again.”
So it looks like Dr Brenner is indeed alive and hiding somewhere.

Dustin and Steve will be teaming up again for season 3
Show bosses have hinted that Eleven will find some more “numbers” in season three.
Kali was Eight - so there are more Hawkins Lab test subjects out there.
“We’ve met Eight and we’ve met Eleven, there’s lots of other numbers between those,” Levy explained.
One things for certain, poor Will Byers (Noah Schnapp) won’t have as much of a hard time in season three.
“We’re going to give Will a break,” Levy told Glamour magazine.
We can also expect some more of the best bromance on television next season as Dustin and Steve (Gaten Matarazzo and Joe Keery) will be reuniting.
STRANGER THINGS has been confirmed for a third season, much to the delight of fans of the spooky, retro Netflix hit. But one burning question from season 1 still remains: Is Dr Brenner alive? Will he come back for season 3? We look at the evidence.
